If you or someone you care for has heard the words, “You have cancer,” then you know firsthand that a cancer diagnosis can change lives – physically and emotionally.
Helping patients and those who love and care for them cope with the emotional side of the disease was the motivation behind Lilly Oncology's creation, in 2004, of the Oncology On CanvasSM: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition.
The 2012 competition is now underway and the competition presenters – Lilly Oncology and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) – invite residents of the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada, who have been touched by cancer - patients, family members, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers - to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning.
Telling one's story through art and narrative is not a cure-all or panacea. But it can help.
To date, 3,600 individuals have shared their stories. Now, it's your turn - and you don't have to be a professional artist or writer to do it.
It's the sharing of the story that counts.
