Cast Away with Cancer

Katherine Wilson believed life was not a dress rehearsal, which is why, after being diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in her early 20s, she continued making the most of every moment — spending time with family and friends and pursuing her nursing degree.

She earned her degree from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Nursing shortly before losing her courageous battle with cancer at the age of 28. We are privileged to present "Cast Away With Cancer," her inspiring story, posted with permission from the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, where it originally appeared in April 2009. The article includes a photograph of Katherine and her father, who showed his love and solidarity by shaving his head. The photograph, taken by Katherine's mother, Anne, won the "Best of the United States Overall" and "Best of Family Members, Friends or Caregivers" categories in the 2006 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition.
